The Bible gives us wisdom on the difference between being spiritual and being religious. In Colossians 2:8 it says, “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.” This verse reminds us that true spirituality comes from having a close relationship with God through faith in Jesus, not from worldly traditions or philosophies.
On the other hand, the Bible speaks against religion in many places. In Matthew 15:7-9 Jesus says, “You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.” He was speaking out against the religious hypocrisy of his day.
In summary, being spiritual is about having an intimate relationship with God and a personal faith in Jesus, while being religious is more focused on outward traditions and practices that don’t always align with scripture.
