A Christian’s relationship with God is based on faith and prayer is one essential way to maintain that relationship. Prayer is defined as “an ardent desire or wish” or “to request earnestly or fervently.” The act of prayer is an acknowledgement that we are not self-sufficient, that we are depending on God for help, for strength, and for guidance. It is an essential part of a Christian’s life because it is through prayer that we maintain our connection with God.

Prayer is powerful because it is our way of communicating with the all-powerful God. When we pray, we are coming before the throne of grace with confidence, knowing that He hears us and will answer us according to His will (Hebrews 4:16). We can approach God’s throne with boldness because we have been given free access to Him through Christ (Ephesians 2:18).

Prayer is also powerful because it is an act of obedience. When we pray, we are obeying God’s command to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). When we obey God’s commands, we are living in accordance with His will for our lives and we can expect His blessing (1 John 3:22).

Prayer is powerful because it is an act of thanksgiving. When we offer thanksgiving to God, we are acknowledging all that He has done for us. We are thanking Him for His goodness, His mercy, and His grace. We are also thanking Him for His provision, His protection, and His guidance. When we offer thanksgiving to God, we are acknowledging His sovereignty and we are declaring our dependence on Him.

Prayer is powerful because it is an act of intercession. When we pray for others, we are standing in the gap and we are interceding on their behalf. We are asking God to intervene on their behalf and we are believing that He is able to do more than we could ever ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

Prayer is a powerful weapon that we have been given to use in our fight against spiritual warfare. When we pray, we are putting on the armor of God and we are taking our stand against the enemy (Ephesians 6:10-18). Prayer is powerful because it is an act of warfare that releases the power of God into our lives and into our situation.
